MBTI vs RVEAL: Which Is More Useful for Career Decisions?

MBTI describes personality preferences that can inform career exploration. RVEAL examines how a person prefers to work and what a role or workplace asks of them. MBTI can help generate occupation ideas; RVEAL helps a job seeker compare the responsibilities and conditions behind those titles with their own working pattern.

What does the MBTI assessment measure?

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator describes four preference pairs: Extraversion–Introversion, Sensing–Intuition, Thinking–Feeling and Judging–Perceiving. The resulting four-letter type gives people a way to discuss how they direct attention, use information, make decisions and approach the outside world. MBTI's publisher says people can act outside their preferences when circumstances call for it.

MBTI also has a career application. MBTIonline Careers suggests occupations and predicted satisfaction from MBTI results, with information to help people research those occupations. This can widen a search when someone is unsure which fields to investigate.

What does RVEAL assess about work?

RVEAL assesses Drive through motivation, working style and pace. It interprets those results alongside the person's Skills and Focus when considering career alignment. The assessment describes preferred contributions and pace, along with the relationship between felt work expectations and what motivates the person.

Job titles rarely state how a team divides work, makes decisions or handles competing demands. RVEAL coaching can use the person's results to identify what to ask about those conditions and how to describe the contribution they want to make.
